Crossing Boundaries to Improve Health in Our Communities

The Health Circle is a national community of people and organizations who fund, run, and study health leadership development. We have come together in a circle to connect our current and ongoing learning; to share resources, tools, information and successful leadership development approaches; and to build relationships that support our individual and collective efforts to support health leadership. To learn more please visit the circle's wiki.

Our theme: This year we will be looking at how we can cross boundaries and build multi-stakeholder partnerships to foster systems level change that supports the health of individuals and communities. We will be asking health circle participants to help us test, explore and learn from their innovative boundary crossing work and research, including:

  • The Theory U: A group of DC HIV/AIDS stakeholders using the U Process for breakthrough change.
  • Boundary Crossing Leadership Programs: A group of eight leadership programs with a health boundary crossing focus have been engaged in cross program learning about how to strengthen boundary crossing leadership (in the broadest sense – i.e. sector, issue, race/ethnicity).
  • Place Matters - Building Healthy Communities: PolicyLink conducted case studies of place based partnerships creating better health outcomes in communities by aligning health with other issues in community that include housing, education, community development and environment.
  • Social Networking: A number of social networking tools are being refined to help identify collaborative opportunities within networks.
  • Your work: We will be inviting additional participants who are involved in boundary crossing work to share what they are learning.

Agenda:
Our Process: Our retreat is being designed around the belief that all participants are contributors and hold the wisdom that we need to strengthen our individual and collective work. We will use a mix of community contribution sessions that are prepared in advance to share lessons from ongoing work; in addition to open space to create room for questions and issues that emerge during our work together. We will spend time as a community in both large and small group discussions to make sure that all voices are heard, and create space in our design for the informal connections and interactions that build relationships and foster ongoing learning.
