A Message for the New Year - 2002
Posted January 1st, 2002 by Deborah MeehanWe have all been deeply touched by the tragic events of 9/11. Most of us have asked or been asked how our lives will change. This is a leadership question. The people of the United States are rapidly developing a new understanding of what it means to be citizens of a global community. As we grapple with fear and loss we try to balance civil rights and security. The economic impact of 9/11 and budget allocations to security and the military will have grave consequences for poor people in this country.
Our work of developing leaders has taken on new urgency and importance. We need to ask ourselves what type of leadership will best serve healing, peace and humanity. How can we cultivate leaders who will be thoughtful and compassionate, hold a global perspective, grasp democratic principles, value diversity and have the courage to grapple with complex problems in pursuit of systemic solutions?
We have an opportunity to share lessons within the leadership community about how to develop these leadership capacities. If leadership is enacted in the popular discourse about what is really important, we may have an opportunity to engage the American people in the creation of a more humane world.
In Peace,
Deborah
