Webinar Recap: Boundary Spanning Leadership Integrated with Network Development | September 21, 2015

Our presenter Chris Ernst is a four-way player: He is active in both research and practice of both leadership development and organizational network analysis. Chris is VP of Leadership and OE at Juniper Networks and a former senior faculty member of the Center for Creative Leadership.

In this interactive workshop, Chris will shared how Juniper Networks is reimagining the way work gets done in networked organizations. Drawing upon the best-selling book Boundary Spanning Leadership, participants were able to:
 

  1. Identify five type of boundaries that limit innovation and the organizational practices to overcome them
  2. Experience a case study at Juniper, including what’s working and traps encountered
  3. Harvest ideas about how to put boundary spanning leadership and organizational networks into practice
     

Background
Innovation today spans boundaries– it thrives in networks where information and expertise flow laterally, diagonally, and in spirals. Senior executives agree, but say that spanning wide-ranging functional, stakeholder, and geographic boundaries is easier said than done. Research by the Center for Creative Leadership shows that 99% of the senior executives surveyed said that working across boundaries is important for business success, yet just 7% said they were “very effective” at doing so. Until recently, networks were seemingly invisible and underappreciated in comparison to formal, hierarchical structure. Recent advances in organizational network analysis and boundary spanning leadership has changed that, yielding critical insights into how to catalyze collaboration, drive innovation, and transform organizations. 

 

Chris Ernst Introduction

Chris Ernst is Vice-President of Leadership and Organization Effectiveness at Juniper Networks in Silicon Valley. His life’s work is to develop new social innovations and networked environments that empower people to collaborate across wide-ranging boundaries to tackle their toughest challenges. Chris was a founding member in launching the Center for Creative Leadership’s  Organizational Leadership practice, and a lead researcher in CCL’s studies of interdependent leadership cultures. Chris is published in the Harvard Business Review, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Chief Learning Officer and MIT Sloan Management Review, and the CCL best-selling book, Boundary Spanning Leadership: Six Practices for Solving Problems, Driving Innovation, and Transforming Organizations
